Letter of Recommendation
May 23, 2003
Dear Sir or Madam:
As head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Mr.***’s graduate thesis advisor, I would like to strongly recommend him to you as a qualified candidate.
I got to know Mr. Wang in the courses of Digital Signal Processing that I offered in his third academic year. He soon aroused my special attention by his performance in experiments. Once, I asked the students to design a band elimination filter adopting HANNING technology. As usual, he finished his work first. However, I was surprised to find him still in the laboratory in the evening when I returned to get some materials. More amazing to me was his just completed new design all by himself—a filter with Parks-McMlellan algorithm, a better and more difficult one that he mastered by self-study. The filter demonstrated optimal performance. I was pleased to find the great research potential he showed in the innovation as well as his assiduous spirit.
Mr. *** outperformed most of his peers academically. Among the elites in our Teaching Reform Class which set higher standards for the top students, he still stood out among the best students. He specially excels in DSP and DIP and got scores of above 90 for both of them. In the exam of Signal and System, he even got a full mark—100, the only one in class.
Now he is doing his graduation project in my Lab. Using the knowledge he learned in my class about the standards of the H.263 and the MPEG-4, he became intrigued in the image compressing and coding theory. Therefore, I invite him to join my recent research—Spatially Related Algorithm in DIP. After studying the recent progress in this field, he started testing some ideas in practical usage. For examples, he found that the spatial correlation could be further used explicitly to choose the searching strategy, in addition to the starting point, to combine the advantages of a non-center-biased search, such as TSS, and a center-biased search like FSS. When he told me of it excitingly, I informed him at once he was not the first one to think so. However, I was content of his performance an encouraged him to carry on..
I take it a pride to have such an excellent student as Mr.***. Therefore, I recommend him to you without reservation. If you admit him, I believe that he will soon prove himself excellent and become a pride of your university. Your favorable consideration of his application will be highly appreciated, and if there is anything else you hope to learn, please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely yours,
LIT****
