I knew such news report will get different opinions so that I posted it as a discussable topic. There are many issues related to this news report.
1. Since 1970s the mechanism in neuron level for learning and memory has been counted to LTP (and LTD later on). In recent years the scientists have found some new neurons emerging during learning and memorizing process. So we have reason to assume these new neurons related to memories. 2. However, do these new neurons materialize the whole or partial memories, or they are just some side-products of this process? Could it be the case that they are only going to help the brain working better later on? As my limited knowledge, scientists have no convincible answer yet. 3. The new discovery in this report should be important, as my judgment. At least, it tells us these new neurons do not materialize the whole memories. However, like bioguider
mentioned, it is not able to exclude the partially materializing memories. 4. The reporter’s judgment seems not professional enough. He (or she) did not mention anything about LTP and he thought that the discovery is able to totally exclude the contribution of the new neurons in learning and memories, based on the title used in this article.
